Nightlife

Nightlife

Created for a final project at BrainStation. The Nightlife app solves the problem with helping anybody from all demographics find the perfect way to spend their night

Overview

Problem

The issue with going for a night out is that there is a hard indication to whether the place you want to go is good quality without using something like Google reviews. This can make deciding between where to go, more challenging and overwhelming. Additionally online review sites can be misleading or outdated.

Solution

Solution

I’ve solved this problem by implementing features such as adding review sections, interactive map to show how far different places are, categories section for people that may want different kinds of night outs (clubbing, cinema, etc).

Research

As a designer, I knew that I couldn’t be solving problems for myself. I couldn't assume that the problem I was facing was widespread. Therefore, I conducted research in two selected areas

I took to the app store and surveyed reviews of current nightlife apps

Conducting interviews with people around me from different age ranges

A really interesting common theme amongst people when they were writing reviews for their nightlife app is that the nightlife app was very niche in what the app would show as a good “night out”. For example many users complained that the app would only show local rap or punk music.

Another issue people were having was with the inconsistency in prices where the app would display one price while the actual place is an entirely different place.

With the previous information in mind, I had drafted and prepared some questions to ask people around me about their nights out and how they like to spend it.

The nightlife app would allow users to buy tickets (providing barcode for entry), get regular notifications about any changes to a venue and have direct communication with the owners of the business

In regards of similar apps. There are apps that have similar functionalities but none of which have all the functionalities listed into one app, making the nightlife app more unique from the rest of the market

For the colour scheme I used a software called “Coolors”. Coolors is a web app that gives you popular and high quality colour schemes. From Coolors I found the colour scheme #729EFF #724CF9 #121212 #CA7DF9

For the font choice, I chose to go with Montserrat. I chose this font for a few reasons one of which being that Montserrat can fit any style of app and it will still look aesthetically pleasing. Another reason being that Montserrat is incredibly readable making it an excellent font to use for things such as accessibility.

Wireframing

In the final wireframe compared to the early wireframe. I enhanced the login screen by removing white space with an image. This added a better visual hierarchy and effectively guided users to the sign up button

After showing the early wireframes to Richard, Victoria and Maisie, they all agreed that the page with the listings shown wasn’t meeting their needs as they couldn't choose the exact type of place they wanted to go for a night out. Moving forward onto the final wireframe design, I added a category section at the top so my users can filter by the exact place that they would like to go. This small changed has improved the usability and enhanced the apps ability to cater to a bigger audience

This layout was inspired by Pinterest and Instagram. I really like how this turned out and how well the visual hierarchy works.

When shown to the research users. They were able to navigate the login page quickly and they knew exactly where to go, validating the effectiveness of the designs

Through thorough research, user-testing and design iterations, my Nightlife app idea has turned into a functional, user friendly tool for users of all demographics to find their perfect way to spend a night. I was able to integrate an interactive map and a filters section which ensured that the users using the app, had their needs and requirements met.

Through working on this project, I learnt that the most important part of UI/UX design is to have a good skill in empathy and understanding with your user. The research and user testing I conducted highlighted the issues that there is with other nightlife apps. With targeting those issues and meeting the users needs. I was able to make a positive social impact on users socials lives.

While the final design addresses the core challenges of finding reliable information and venue variety, there is always room for improvement. Going forward, I would refine the visual hierarchy of certain screens to further enhance user flow and overall experience. This project has not only helped me improve my design skills but also, reinforced the importance of designing with empathy and creating solutions that are both practical and engaging.

In the end, the Nightlife app became more than just a place to find venues, it became a personalized tool for users to discover places that matched their unique preferences. By deeply understanding the challenges faced by different user types and iterating on feedback, I was able to create an app that was not only functional but intuitive and engaging.

The venue page worked really well during testing. The research users found it informative and were able to navigate the page effortlessly, understanding exactly what to do.

Though, if I were to make any adjustments, I would focus on improving the visual hierarchy. While the page is functional, the hierarchy feels slightly off, and refining it would enhance the overall user experience.
